The Ring of Isengard as the War of the Ring left it: the black tower of Orthanc standing untouched — complete with full interior — amid broken walls, flooded pits and industrial works, with Fangorn Forest pressing close, Ents among the wreckage and eagles circling overhead.
Men of Gondor raised this place in the last days of the Second Age and named it Angrenost, the Iron Fortress, guarding the Gap of Rohan beside its sister citadels of the White Mountains. At its heart they set Orthanc: five hundred feet of black rock fused by a craft later ages could not repeat — or break. The Stewards granted its keys to Saruman the White in T.A. 2759, and under him the green vale of Nan Curunír was slowly hollowed into a war-factory of pits, forges and breeding-dens, until the Ents of Fangorn marched on it in March 3019 and drowned the whole ring in a single night. Even they could not scratch the tower — "no hammer could dint it" — and so it stands here as they left it: Orthanc whole, everything around it wrack and floodwater. In the Fourth Age the vale was given to the Ents and grew green again as the Treegarth of Orthanc.
