Orthanc stands tall in the middle of the stronghold, home to Saruman the White.
Men of Gondor raised this place in the last days of the Second Age and named it Angrenost, the Iron Fortress, guarding the Gap of Rohan beside its sister citadels of the White Mountains. At its heart they set Orthanc: five hundred feet of black rock fused by a craft later ages could not repeat, nor break. The Stewards of Gondor granted its keys to Saruman the White in T.A. 2759, and under him the green vale of Nan Curunír was slowly hollowed into a war-factory of pits, forges and breeding-dens, until the Ents of Fangorn marched on it in March 3019 and floodded the whole place.
