Gondor was born from catastrophe: when Númenor was drowned, Elendil's sons sailed up the Anduin and founded the South-kingdom — the Stone-land, named for a mastery of masonry no neighbouring people could match. Tolkien likened it to Rome or Byzantium: ancient, urbane, haunted by its own former greatness, ruled for a thousand years by Stewards who never claimed the crown. That is the character we build toward — dressed white stone, tiered walls and monumental gates, from the seven circles of Minas Tirith to the fought-over ruins of Osgiliath and the old Elf-haven of Edhellond by the sea.

Gondor
Where the Anduin meets the sea, the last kingdom of the Men of the West still stands — seven white walls rising toward a tower that has watched Mordor's gate for three thousand years.
